I did this awhile ago for a CGhub challenge.

Edit: The piece wasn't really completely finished when I turned it in for the CGhub challenge, so I decided to go back in and finish it.

Eerie, atmospheric and dramatic scene! It certainly piques the viewer's interest and we wonder who the hazy stranger is and what is the macabre place this ancient stairway is leading down to.

This artwork is a brilliant and impactful masterpiece!

I cannot find any flaws at all in this artwork. Every brush stroke, every line, every aspect of this artwork screams sheer brilliance, creative excellence and meticulous attention to detail.

The rotten skulls on a pole arrest the viewer's attention immediately - at first, they seem to be the focus and impetus of the eerieness of the scene, thus setting its macabre tone. The dusty and fading skull on the floor at the bottom of the steps, reinforce the impression that this is an ancient and forbidden place.

The atmospheric lighting is accentuated further across the leafless (dead) forest of intertwining trees, as it fades gracefully into the soft mist. We can almost feel the deathly calm, and we realise that this is a foul place whether nothing alive stirs. The trees frame the scene nicely.

The viewer's focus automatically centers on the weather-beaten stone steps as they wind downwards. The textures, colours and the lighting on them are perfect and a closer inspection shows how the lighting is reflected on the steps. Each step downwards illustrates a gradual descent into darkness and decay.

The viewer's attention finally falls on the mysterious stranger. The haziness around the stranger is deliberate and accurate, as it adds to the mystery. We don't know who the stranger is or why he/she is here, but we know something exciting is going to happen. The stranger's aura is surreal, and there's almost an air of expectaion at the arrival of the stranger. Yet the body language of the stranger conveys hesitation as he/she is getting a feel of the place before deciding what to do next.

And the question of what happens next is exactly what leads to the tension and excitement of this scene.

The viewer's curiosity is now at its peak, thanks to all these aspects of the whole working together perfectly, and now we realise why this scene is truly a masterpiece. Every effort put into this artwork has paid off superlatively, and kudos to the author for conceptualizing, designing and creating and sharing this spectacular piece of art.

Well done!
